About the doctor

Prof. Mohamed Rela is Chairman & Managing Director of the Rela Institute & Medical Centre Chennai and one of the world's foremost liver transplant surgeons, having personally led 5,500+ liver transplants — the largest such experience by any single surgeon globally. He holds the Guinness World Record for performing a liver transplant on the youngest-ever recipient (a 5-day-old baby). He trained at Madurai Medical College, then King's College Hospital London where he served as Professor of Liver Transplant Surgery for two decades before returning to India to establish the liver transplant programme at Global Hospitals and subsequently the Rela Institute. A Padma Shri laureate (2021) and recipient of the Order of the British Empire (OBE), he is past President of the International Liver Transplantation Society (ILTS) — the only Indian to hold the position — and has trained an entire generation of liver transplant surgeons across India and globally.
