Padma Shri Dr. Mammen Chandy is the Founding Director of Tata Medical Center Kolkata and one of India's pioneers of bone marrow transplantation — having performed India's first successful allogeneic bone marrow transplant for thalassaemia at CMC Vellore in 1986. He trained at Christian Medical College Vellore (MD Medicine) and pursued advanced clinical haematology and bone marrow transplant training at the Royal Melbourne Hospital, Australia. He served as Professor & Head of Haematology at CMC Vellore for over two decades before founding the Tata Medical Center Kolkata in 2011. A Padma Shri laureate (2014), Dr. B. C. Roy Awardee, and past President of the Indian Society of Hematology & Blood Transfusion, he has authored 300+ peer-reviewed publications and trained the majority of senior haematologists currently practising in India.
