Dr. Rajendra A. Badwe led the Tata Memorial Centre as Director from 2008 to 2023 and continues as Professor and Senior Surgical Oncologist at Tata Memorial Hospital — globally renowned for his definitive work on breast cancer surgery, including the landmark TMH 1631 trial that established the survival benefit of removing primary tumour in metastatic breast cancer. He trained at Tata Memorial Centre and has personally performed over 30,000 breast and gynaecological cancer surgeries; under his leadership TMC expanded into the Tata Memorial National Network with cancer hospitals in Varanasi, Vishakhapatnam, Sangrur, Mullanpur and Guwahati. A Padma Shri (2013) laureate, he chairs national committees on cancer policy and is a member of the World Health Organization's expert advisory panel on cancer control. His clinical trials have shaped global breast and cervical cancer treatment guidelines.
