Dr. Suresh H. Advani is the founding father of medical oncology in India and performed the country's first bone marrow transplant in 1983, establishing the field of haematological malignancy treatment in the subcontinent. Across a five-decade career he has personally treated over 100,000 cancer patients. He practises at Jaslok Hospital and SL Raheja Hospital Mumbai and previously led Medical Oncology at Tata Memorial Hospital for over 25 years, training a generation of Indian medical oncologists now spread across the world's leading cancer centres. A Padma Bhushan (2002) and Padma Shri (2012) laureate and recipient of the Dr. B. C. Roy National Award, Dr. Advani — a polio survivor confined to a wheelchair — is widely regarded as a humanitarian icon of Indian oncology and continues to consult on the country's most complex haematology and solid-tumour cases.
